MTPRC Newsletter, February 2012

Hi there,

Thank you for signing up to MTPRC's monthly Newsletter.

On Saturday, January 21st, almost 40 MTPRC volunteers came out to help Red. Red, the beautiful chained Akita in East Nashville, had been in the same spot for the past 8 years.

MTPRC met Red through our annual HayDays and after seeing his plight, knew we had to help. Fortunately, we were able to meet with Red's family and they were very excited that we were able to fix Red's fence and finally get him off his chain. Seeing Red come off his chain and run free in his yard was extremely heartwarming and joyful. See video of Red coming off his chain and a few photos from the day here.

Thank you to all the people who helped make Red's fence project come true: Tonya and Darrick Davidson, Sherri and Michael Minnuno, Jason and Allison Ligon, Anna Henley, Jason Bagget, Marc and Kim Sullivan, Leighann McCullom, Kim Kmiec, Jana Mandes, Barbara McCarthy, Dave and Kym Colella, Susan and Greg Hammond, Karin and Michael Villanova, Victoria and Rob Hogan, Lindsay and Chris Mihalcik, Daniel Cooke, Casey Cooper, Steve Cornelius, Jerry Vandiver, Rowdy Shaw, Elizabeth Chauncey, Shelley Madison, Kim Roberts, Tia Smith, David Hastings, Tiffany Gaylon, Perry Stone, Mike Nickels, Alyson Holt, Chip Burns, Janis Tilton, Penny and Brian Singer.

MTPRC is grateful to the Humane Society of the United States (hsus.org) crew who joined us. The HSUS is an organization MTPRC admires and supports, so to have many of them help with Red's fence was a privilege.

Thank you also to every single person who kindly donated so that MTPRC was able to purchase the supplies, especially CampChaos who went above and beyond for Red.

I would like to also thank the ever patient, dedicated and brilliant Timm Biery, without whom MTPRC would not be possible.

If you didn't get to join us to help with Red's fence but want to volunteer, or if you did join us and want to help again, then join us for MTPRC's 3rd HeartHay Day this Saturday February 4th from 10:00am - 2:00pm.

We need volunteers to help distribute supplies, and are in need of items such as durable dog toys, dog treats, blankets, and cedar shavings. We have wonderful donation bins (handmade by Allison Ligon and Karin Villanova) at The Wild Cow in East Nashville and My Sisters Closet in Green Hills. Our flyer was designed by Jen Kilgore. If you would like to print and post one please do :) You can download the .pdf flyer here.

To help, email hayday@mtprc.org or check out the Event page on Facebook.

Lastly, if you know of any dogs in need who could benefit from HeartHay Day please let us know!

Thanks!

Pet Of The Month

Vanna Capi & Hilary

Capi and Hilary aren’t even siblings, but they are nearly the same age. They have grown up together, along with Hilary’s sisters Bunny and Cinders.

Capi is a sweet, affectionate lap boy who was found alone on the grounds of the state capitol where he had to have been abandoned by some uncaring human.

Hilary and the girls are the daughters of a golf course mama who had litter after litter until a good Samaritan spayed her and sent her back to live in the groundskeeper’s shop.

The tiny yellow fluffs have grown into outgoing, playful, purrful kittens. All are now about 7 months old, fully vetted including microchips and ready to find their forever homes.

Contact Silver Rescue at silverrescue@gmail.com or visit the website at www.silverrescue.org to see them and other adoptable dogs and cats.

See MTPRC's previous Pets Of The Month!

If you or your organization have a foster dog or cat you'd like to have featured in our Pet Of The Month section, get in touch with us at webmaster@mtprc.org!

Agape Animal Rescue
Abandoned. Neglected. Abused. Lost. At AGAPE, they have seen it all when it comes to man’s best friend. But despite the misfortunes these animals have endured, their commitment to them remains steadfastly clear: to provide loving, emotionally stable, nurturing foster care for them while they wait for their forever homes, for their forever families.

Agape's goal is to help these animals in every way possible - emotionally, socially, physically - so that the transition into their forever homes will be as smooth as possible.

Volunteers Needed

UPAW is currently soliciting members for the following new committees:

Education
We know the importance of teaching responsible pet care to the next generation. We continue to work alongside Lovie's Legacy (www.lovieslegacy.org) in schools, both public and private, girl scouts, boy scouts and other youth-oriented groups. If you enjoy being with children and animals, this is the committee for you.

Domestic Violence and Child Abuse
The correlation between domestic violence and child abuse has been well-documented. In that our efforts are so similar, we plan to explore opportunities to partner with these organizations to prevent the abuse and violence and protect these victims.

If you would like to be a part of either of these committees, please contact us at UPAW@comcast.net.

Fred The German Shepard:
Lest We Forget...

Fred the German ShepardYou may remember Fred from a report done in our May newsletter. For MITS, some volunteers stopped by Fred's house to drop off some dog toys. Unfortunately, the owner was not home so they left the toys at the door. Please remember Fred in your thoughts! He is still living chained to that tree in the front yard on East Due West Avenue in Madison TN. He will be there until he dies. There is no law against this in Nashville.
